Strassoldo is placed in a very central area of the Region Friuli Venezia Giulia and from there it is easy to reach Triest, Venice and the seaside.

The castle of Strassoldo (Upper Castle of Strassoldo) like its nearby twin castle of Strassaldo di Sotto (Lower Castle) is placed in the heart of a medieval hamlet and is surrounded by a centuries-old park and spring water streams and rivers. It´s a so-called „water-castle“ and is one of the very few in Europe still belonging to the same family, that built it more than a thousand years ago, the counts of Strassoldo.

The Castello di Strassoldo di Sopra (Upper castle of Strassoldo) is in the heart of a medieval “borgo” and is surrounded by flourishing garden washed by spring-water rivers and streams.

Here you feel the flair of a place where history has never been interrupted as the castle has always been the residence place of the counts of Strassoldo that built it more than a thousand years ago and this is why it is still furnished with ancient furniture and paintings.
In Spring and Summer the gardens are full of wonderful flowers, English and ancient roses and rare plants.
It is possible to rent the main building of the castle for elegant banquets or the cancelleria for more rural events. There are many solutions.

The counts of Strassoldo have recently restored many parts of the castle of Strassoldo di Sopra, among which the ancient rice mill and now offer B&B hospitality in 4 double room and a stunning historical and natural setting. In the rice mill there are 4 spacious double rooms. They are equipped with air conditioning, hand-painted furniture, wooden floors and beams and bathrooms with whirl bathtubs. The Suite is on the second floor of the tower. Breakfast is served in the garden in Summer or on the ground floor of the rice mill.

To reach the main building your have to pass the ancient „Cistigna“ arch and stroll along the cobbled path of the „borgo vecchio“. On the right side you will sea a row of houses called „Le Case degli armigeri“ and „ La Vicinia“. The first was where the guarde used to live and the second the administrative and studical centre of the place in medieval times.

A jewel of the castle is its garden. In Strassoldo the ground is never colder than 13 Celsius degrees and this has a beneficial influence on nature and allows many exotic species to grow in the area – from old Chinese rose bushes to palm trees. Canadian maple trees bring Indian summer colours in Friuli.

Since countess Gabriella W´illiams di Strassaldo and her husband Paul took over the castle many renovations works were carried out and now the buildings and gardens havce acquired their ancient flair again. Among other things, six large and beautiful rooms have been restored. There is also a lovely arched medieval house that may be rented as an equipped holiday house, for a mimimum of two nights.

The tower was first mentioned in a document dating back to 565. Both casteled developed each one around one of the original towers, which were probably made of wood at the beginning and then of bricks and stones like nowadays. The tower war formerly higher and two floors were taken off ater a severe earthquake in Lubiana whose effects were felt also in this area. Thanks to recent huge restoration and consolidation works the tower has now aquired ist ancient beauty.
